Plasterboard calculator: how many sheets do I need?
Multiply the length by the height (or width, for a ceiling) to get the area, divide by the area of one sheet, then add about 10% for cuts and waste and round up. A 2400 × 1200 mm sheet covers 2.88 m².
Example: A wall 4 m long and 2.4 m high is 9.6 m². That’s 3.3 sheets of 2400 × 1200 mm, or 3.7 with 10% extra, so order 4 sheets.
How to use it
- Measure the length and height of each wall, or the length and width of the ceiling
- Choose your sheet size
- Leave the waste at 10% unless you have lots of cuts
- Add the result to your list and send it for a quote
These are estimates for planning and pricing, not specifications. Check quantities against your drawings, and follow your builder, engineer or the manufacturer’s guidance. Allan will check the quantities with you before anything is ordered.
Common questions
How many sheets of plasterboard per m²?
A standard 2400 × 1200 mm sheet covers 2.88 m², so you need about 0.35 sheets per square metre before allowing for waste. Smaller 1800 × 1200 mm sheets cover 2.16 m².
Should I take doors and windows off the area?
For small openings it’s simplest to leave them in, because the offcuts are rarely reusable. Take large openings, such as patio doors, off the area before you calculate.
How much extra plasterboard should I order?
About 10% covers cuts and breakages on most rooms. Allow more for rooms with lots of angles, sloping ceilings or small sections.
What thickness of plasterboard do I need?
12.5 mm is the usual board for walls and ceilings. The right thickness depends on stud or joist spacing and whether you need fire, moisture or sound performance. The plasterboard guides on this site explain the options.
