Which plasterboard thickness do I need?
Plasterboard comes in a few standard thicknesses and several special types. The right one depends on where it’s going and how far apart the studs or joists are.
Standard thicknesses
12.5 mm is the most common board for walls and ceilings. 9.5 mm is thinner and lighter, used where supports are closer together. 15 mm boards are used where extra fire or sound performance is needed. Always check the manufacturer’s guidance for the maximum stud or joist spacing for each thickness.
Special boards
- Moisture-resistant board for bathrooms and kitchens
- Fire-rated board where fire resistance is required
- Acoustic board to reduce sound between rooms
- Insulated or thermal board for external walls
Ordering tips
- Work out the area and allow extra for cuts and waste
- Order beads, jointing tape and screws at the same time
- Check the board edge (tapered or square) suits how it will be finished
