Loft conversion materials: what you’ll need
Loft conversions vary a lot depending on the roof and the design, so treat this as a starting checklist. Your structural engineer and building control will confirm the specification.
Structure and floor
- Floor joists and any steel beams specified by your engineer
- Joist hangers and fixings
- Floor insulation for sound
- Chipboard or plywood floor deck
Walls and roof
- CLS or treated timber for stud walls
- Roof and wall insulation boards
- Vapour control layer and tapes
- Plasterboard and beads
Light and access
- Roof windows and flashing kits
- Staircase and stair parts
- Fire doors and fire door ironmongery where required
Finishing
- Plaster
- Skirting, architrave and door linings
- Flooring and underlay
This is a general guide, not a specification. Your builder, architect, building control or the manufacturer will confirm exactly what your project needs.

Common questions
Do loft conversions need fire doors?
Often, yes. Building regulations usually require a protected escape route when you add a storey. Your building control officer will confirm what your project needs.
